River Lions Chase History Against Alliance
By Jack Lewis
St. Catharines, ON – The Niagara River Lions continue their road trip after a hard-fought 75-69 loss to the Shooting Stars, who recently strengthened their roster with former CEBL standout Cat Barber and NBA veteran Jay Scrubb.
The River Lions now turn their attention to Friday night’s matchup against the Montreal Alliance.
Niagara enters tonight’s matchup looking to snap a two-game losing streak while also extending the longest winning streak against a single franchise in CEBL history. A victory would extend the River Lions streak to 12 consecutive wins. Individually, Khalil Ahmad has another milestone within reach.
Khalil Ahmad enters tonight’s matchup just 11 points away from becoming the CEBL’s all-time leading scorer. The veteran guard has been outstanding since rejoining the River Lions this season, averaging 20.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.0 steals per game, including a 24-point performance against the Shooting Stars earlier this week. Keonte Kennedy has been the perfect backcourt pairing for Ahmad, averaging 13.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.6 steals in 12 games played this season.
Montreal enters Friday’s contest with a 6-6 record after a close win on the road over Calgary. The Alliance have won two games in a row and currently sit third in the Eastern Conference.
Former Raptors 905 forward Quincy Guerrier leads the charge for the Alliance after the departure of Javon Freeman-Liberty, with an average of 13.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. Michael Hughes II has been another key contributor, averaging 10.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.5 blocks (5th in the league) with a 71% FG% (2nd in the league).
With a chance to snap its losing streak, extend a historic run over Montreal, and witness Khalil Ahmad chase the CEBL scoring record, Friday night's matchup carries plenty of significance. All eyes will be on the Verdun Auditorium as Niagara looks to return to the win column while Ahmad and the River Lions pursue these milestone achievements.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Verdun Auditorium.
