St. Catharines, ON – The Niagara River Lions announced today the signing of Canadian forward Alonzo Walker presented by Deep Relief. The 6’6 forward from Brampton, Ontario will join the team for the 2022 Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) season after playing overseas for BC Prievidza of the Slovenská Basketbalová Liga (SBL) in Slovakia.

In 18 games with BC Prievidza, the 25-year-old is currently averaging 13.3 points and leads the team in 9.8 rebounds per game. Earlier this year, Walker set a career high in points (31) and rebounds (20) earning him a double double in the January game.

“We are excited to have Alonzo on our roster. He is an athletic, versatile player with loads of potential,” said Co-General Manager and Head of Basketball Operations, Antwi Atuahene. “Alonzo is an extremely hard worker with great leadership qualities, and we are looking for him to make a huge impact this season. “

A product of the Orangeville Prep Athlete Institute, Walker’s then teammates included Jamal Murray and Thon Maker, both who went on to be NBA Draft Lottery picks in 2016. Walker committed to NCAA Division 1 Kent State University out of high school and redshirted his freshman year. During the 2016-17 season he averaged 10.6 minutes in 29 games, after which he transferred to Odessa College in west Texas.

Walker moved on to Idaho State University in his junior year and scored a season high 17 points and 3 steals his final game with ISU. Walker completed his collegiate career at Portland State averaging 9.9 points and 5 rebounds with the Vikings. He earned his first professional contract with Dinamo of the Georgian Superliga in 2020.

“I am excited to come home and play in the CEBL this year as it has been a long time since I have played organized basketball in Canada,” said Walker. “My biggest goal for this season is to help the Niagara River Lions become this year’s CEBL Champions!”

Walker becomes the fifth player signed for the upcoming season after Tidjan Keita, Daniel Waldin-Mullings, Jaylen Babb-Harrison and Jake Babic.

The Niagara River Lions are one of the original six teams of the CEBL. Playing out of Meridian Centre in downtown St. Catharines, the River Lions represent the twelve municipalities of the Niagara Region while living up to the River Lions moniker of pride and strength of community.
