Community invited to free launch party Sept. 14 at St. Catharines Market Square

Niagara River Lions director of operations Michelle Biskup says there have been plenty of questions since the basketball club announced earlier this year it would be roaring on the court in a different league.

So, the organization figured what better way to answer some of those questions then throw a party to celebrate joining the Canadian Elite Basketball League, where they can celebrate the move and also answer questions at the same time.

“It‘s a chance to get fans excited about our move to the CEBL and also show them what they can expect when we tip off in May of 2019,” said Biskup. “Over the summer months we’ve been at festivals and events and some people don’t understand the move and have a lot of questions. This is a great way to have a conversation and hopefully build some excitement.”

There will be some speeches, including one by CEBL chief executive officer Mike Morreale, as well as team officials. There will be live music, appetizers and refreshments, player appearances, hourly draws and giveaways, including River Lions merchandise to the first 100 attendees, and more.

“The space will really come to life,” said Biskup, adding one of the elements the CEBL is looking at is community spots for pre-game celebrations. Market Square, she said, could be a good spot to host such a celebration given the venue’s space, ability to shelter attendees from inclement weather, and its proximity to Meridian Centre.

While the party is free to attend, the River Lions are asking those who plan on attending to RSVP online at https://www.riverlions.ca to allow them to plan the event. They have already had more than 250 people respond.

While the season won’t take place until next May, Biskup said there is a lot of work going on to prepare. From hiring staff, to working with the CEBL for upcoming leaguewide announcements, there is no shortage of work to do as they prepare to tipoff next spring.

A presale on season tickets was launched two weeks ago and will continue until early October. Previous season ticket holders will have chance to continue with their seats, while those wishing to get season tickets first will have access before the general sale begins later this fall. Those participating in the presale not only receive priority access for the 10 home games, but also a limited edition River Lions New Era hat. Tickets start at $165 and information is available on the club’s website.

Biskup said the early response has been positive.

“We’ve seen great support from our fans and sponsors, along with a lot of other people in the community,” she said. “It’s been a great reaction. There are a lot of exciting things that will come with this.”

That includes players looking forward to the CEBL. A player showcase was held a couple of weeks ago in Toronto and Biskup said there has been strong interest, especially for those looking to play beyond the winter season, and find an opportunity to play the sport year round.

“It’s really catching on with people,” she said of the league. “We’re excited to see how this continues to build.”
