ST. CATHARINES, ON – LaQuavius Cotton, the 2015 College Slam Dunk Contest Champion, has signed with the Niagara River Lions, the team announced today.
“I am very excited and very grateful for this opportunity to join the River Lions and compete in the NBL. Coming into the season I plan to contribute on the offensive and defensive side of the ball and do whatever it takes to be a great teammate to help the team win and be successful. I’m Ready to Roar!” said Cotton.
Coming out of Delta State University, Cotton tallied 315 points in the 2014-15 season, managing 10.9 points per game that included a career-high 19 points on three occasions. He posted a team second-best 44.6 three-point shooting percentage, completing 41 of his 92 shots. His scoring from the field was solid at 46.5 percent. From the charity stripe he made 84-of-110 for a percentage of 78.2 for the season.
At the 2015 NCAA Slam Dunk competition, 6-foot-6 Cotton stole the show earning a 96.2 score in the semi-finals before taking the title with ease. His athletic ability and scoring calibre landed him a spot with the Houston Rockets NBA D-League affiliate, the Rio Grande Vipers, later that year.
“LaQuavius is an athlete with tremendous upside because of his physical gifts. Offensively, he shoots the ball well from the outside and his athleticism allows him to finish well in the paint. He is also a very good free throw shooter on top of that,” said Head Coach Grâce Lokole. “On defense we’ll be looking for him to step up and take on the challenge of guarding the best players night in and night out. Given his stature and length, it should work well for us.”
With a 42 inch vertical and 84 inch wingspan, Cotton is a player that can make an immediate difference on both ends of the court.
“This is a guy that has the build and skill to get the job done on both sides of the ball. He is a elite level athlete and we are certain that he is going to get a great reception from the crowd,” said Jeffrey Sotiriou, President and General Manager of the River Lions.
With LaQuavius Cotton, the River Lions gain another NCAA Slam Dunk Champion on their roster, joining Marcus Lewis who won the contest one year prior. The Cleveland, Ohio native’s ability to finish, coupled with good ball-handling ability will see a heightened level of athleticism and spectacle in the River Lions offensive game.
