Richard Amardi Makes the Move to Niagara, Signing with the River Lions

Released: September 23, 2016

ST. CATHARINES, ON – The Niagara River Lions are excited to announce the signing of former Orangeville A’s forward Richard Amardi. The Toronto-born athlete becomes the second Canadian to sign with the River Lions as they continue to shape an impressive team leading up to December.

“Knowing the type of talent the River Lions have, it made my decision very easy. Between the coaching staff, ownership and support from fans, I know it is going to be a successful season,” said Amardi.

Amardi was picked up by the Orangeville (then Brampton) A’s during the 2014-15 season and demonstrated his athletic proficiency with 12.3 points per game, 4.5 rebounds and a 67 free throw percentage over the course of two seasons. His .427 three-point field goal mark was an NBL fifth-best in his debut campaign for the A’s, making an average of 2.174 shots per game from the three point range.

In his redshirt senior year, Amardi competed for the Oregon Ducks in which he was one of only six players to appear in all 34 games. His .520 field goal percentage (89-171) made him one of the team’s best that year and recorded an average of 6.4 points per game. In addition, he posted a team second-best in total rebounds at 134 and rebounds per game with 3.9, bringing down five or more in 13 contests.

“Richard is one of the most physically gifted athletes in the NBL, having the ability to stretch the floor with good perimeter shooting but is also athletic and can attack closeouts,” River Lions Head Coach Grâce Lokole said of Amardi. “The potential to be a solid defender is there as well and we have high expectations for Richard. As a Canadian, we think he is one of the best homegrown talents in this league”.

President and General Manager Jeffrey Sotiriou commented on the signing. “Admari is tough in the paint and accurate behind the arc, which makes him unique for his height at 6-foot-9 and makes him all the more valuable. This is a great signing for us and we are confident that he will continue to develop his potential as a River Lion”.
